OSH MasterClass Series: Inaugural Tax Investigation MasterClass
On 2 July 2015, the firm conducted its inaugural event under the OSH MasterClass Series – the Tax Investigations MasterClass. This session focused on key investigatory trends such as abuse of the Productivity and Innovation Credit (PIC); deductibility of expenses in the maritime and bunkering industry; and the emerging practice of cooperation between the Comptroller of Income Tax and criminal investigation agencies such as the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau and Commercial Affairs Department. Masterclass participants were also given an overview of the law governing these issues, before being given a run-through of typical process of a tax investigation. Mr Ong Sim Ho drew on his deep experience in the area to shed some light on the various considerations taken into account by the authorities in deciding to prosecute. Strategies which may be adopted to mount an effective defence in face of these potential prosecutions were also shared with participants.
